City firm lands historic role on Aberdeen bypass route

A FIRM from the Capital has landed a contract worth hundreds of thousands of pounds for preparatory work on the Aberdeen bypass.

Edinburgh-based Headland Archaeology has been awarded the £230,000 contract despite uncertainty over whether the £400 million Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route will even be built. The firm will examine the impact of construction of the 28-mile route on archaeological remains and historical buildings, with the findings used to establish if further investigation is needed.

A spokesman for Aberdeen City Council said: “A contract for preparatory work for the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route was put out to 
tender and has now been 
successfully awarded.” The contract is worth £235,776.

The contract win comes after 
William Walton, the chairman of campaign group RoadSense, last week made another attempt to block construction of the route at the Supreme Court.

A decision on the appeal is expected to be made within three months.
