Christmas dinner at last as turkey-trip woman gets home

A WOMAN who went to the shops to buy a turkey for Christmas but was prevented from returning home by snow has been reunited with her husband – a month after setting off.

Kay Ure was picked up by her husband John yesterday and the couple are now planning to cook and eat their Christmas dinner today.

The Ures live in the Lighthouse Keeper's cottage at Cape Wrath, where they run a caf.

Mrs Ure left to buy the turkey on 19 December. She travelled first to nearby Durness, where she stopped to see friends, and four days later went to Inverness to get the turkey.

But the bad weather meant she could not make it back home and she spent Christmas in a friend's caravan in Durness.

Mr Ure finally picked up his wife in their 4x4 vehicle yesterday after he made it across the Kyle of Durness in his boat.

"It was the longest month of my life without her," he said.

"Kay's got her feet up with a nice glass of sherry.

We will really enjoy Christmas dinner – even if it is a month late. It will be just the two of us – though I guess the spaniels (the couple have six of them] may get a treat too.

"It will be more like a second honeymoon than a late Christmas.

"We will exchange our Christmas gifts – but they are a secret. The best gift for me is having my wife back. It is probably our best ever Christmas."
