ChildLine is still open for those in need

A VITAL helpline for vulnerable children in Edinburgh is operating throughout the festive period.

ChildLine in Edinburgh will be staying open for those who need someone to talk to, and volunteers are ensuring the base will be manned 24 hours a day, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Last year, counsellors at ChildLine's Edinburgh base spoke to 100 children between December 24 and January 1, with the service across the UK speaking to 2177 children during that time.

Elaine Chalmers, head of ChildLine in Scotland, said: "The festive period for many children means happy times with family and friends. But for some young people this time of year can be difficult.

"Last year the service in Scotland received calls on a range of issues, such as family relationship problems, bullying, loneliness, abuse and the facts of life.

"These problems can escalate over the Christmas period and there may be some young people across Scotland who are struggling through the holidays.

"We are urging young people not to keep their problems to themselves and speak to a ChildLine counsellor in confidence."

Young people can contact ChildLine on 0800 1111, or by visiting www.childline.org.uk
