Charity zipwire feat ends in marriage proposal

IT was a daredevil feat that required nerves of steel, with a local man taking a zipwire on to the hallowed turf at Murrayfield... where he then proposed to his girlfriend.

Tommy Welch, 25, took part in the zipwire event yesterday to raise money for cystic fibrosis, a condition he developed as a result of being born two months premature.

Despite his lung function being half of someone without cystic fibrosis and missing most of secondary school, Tommy has a degree from the University of Stirling, works full time and is now looking forward to a wedding after getting a “yes” from Lauren McCallum.

He was one of several who took part in the zipwire event from Murrayfield’s south stand, taking the 200m trip to the pitch to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

He said: “Cystic fibrosis can be difficult to live with, there’s a lot of medication every day and you’re in hospital a lot. I try to live a normal life though and do my bit to try and raise awareness and money.”

Elsewhere in the Capital this weekend, thousands of spectators huddled in the Grassmarket on Saturday for Scotland’s first Red Bull Hill Chasers bike race – boasting stunt supremo Danny MacAskill.

Crowds 3000 strong lined the Grassmarket and Victoria Street to watch the action, culminating in a spectacular victory from Liam Moynihan, 22, with a time of 18.7 seconds.
