Chance to have say on library plans

A WIDE-RANGING consultation is to be carried out into plans to shake up the way that the Capital’s libraries are operated.

The Evening News revealed yesterday that a new strategy has proposed changes to opening hours, with most libraries set to close on Thursday evening, while all would remain shut on a Sunday. Smaller facilities would also only open for five days a week instead of six.

The proposed changes would result in a £550,000 saving, although council chiefs have pledged that there will be no compulsory redundancies, with savings instead coming from using fewer temporary workers.

Councillors have now approved plans to put the strategy out to consultation, likely to happen over December and January.
