A fire crew closed the road on Saturday to allow highway workers to cut away heavy branches brought down by strong winds.

Local witness Colin Walker said the storm caused “chaos” in the leafy residential neighbourhood, saying “large sections of a tree were blown down” in Morningside Drive.

He added: “The fire brigade were quickly on the scene and the road was closed as an emergency measure whilst forestry contractors removed the debris. After several hours the road was reopened.”
