Canine cops lead by nose in six arrests

POLICE dogs have been hailed after six men were detained over alleged housebreaking and thefts.

Ellie and Zico, both German Shepherds, were in action in Clovenstone Drive early yesterday after reports of men trying to steal a car.

The men fled the scene when officers arrived at around 3.25am, but the dogs traced four of them in gardens.

An hour later, police were called to Craigcrook Road after two men were spotted acting suspiciously. Officers detained one man within a white Transit van.

However, another male made off into nearby woodland and was tracked by Zico.

The men detained during both incidents are helping police with their investigations.

Chief Superintendent Derek Robertson, operations division commander, said: “Those who flee the scene of a crime can and will still be brought to justice based on the competent work carried out by our dogs, their handlers and the other resources Lothian and Borders Police can utilise.”
