Campaign launched to save historic regiment identities

A CAMPAIGN to save historic army regiment identities has been launched.

It follows concerns that the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders could be scrapped and its name merged with the Black Watch as part of UK government cost-cutting plans.

The campaign was launched by shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy in London yesterday.

He said: “This is not just about Scotland’s pride but protecting the long and enduring relationship within the British Armed Forces. Scotland has been part of the British forces’ DNA and history. Many Scottish units have histories dating back to the 18th century or before.

“Communities across Scotland will not want to see historic cap badges cast aside.”
