Call to sell off number plates

CASH-strapped councils should sell off valuable licence plates to raise funds, a Green MSP has warned.

Scots councils are sitting on 21 private car number plates worth up to £750,000. Edinburgh City Council owns S0 and S10 plates valued at £115,000.

Green Party MSP Patrick Harvie said it was “insulting” that the plates had not been sold to raise much-needed funds. “It is extraordinary that they wouldn’t at least look at what price they’d get when times are tough,” he said.

His calls were backed by the TaxPayers Alliance.
