CITY researchers have called for better monitoring of whether much-needed medicines reach mothers and babies in the developing world.

Members of Edinburgh University’s Centre for Population Health Sciences joined an international research programme into the issue. They studied the use of antibiotic treatment for pneumonia in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and found that mothers could often not recall illnesses their children had been diagnosed with or what medicines were prescribed.

Professor Harry Campbell said: “A key aspect of running effective health programmes is to measure intervention coverage accurately, so that progress can be tracked and problems solved.”
