A MUGGER who tried to rob an 89-year-old man in broad daylight after following him off a bus has been convicted.

Ian Paterson, 47, was found guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday of assault with intent to rob after attacking his elderly victim on October 20 last year.

The incident made the front page of the Evening News in November after police released CCTV images of Paterson. He has been remanded in custody for background reports and will be sentenced on March 20.

The court heard how Paterson followed his victim, who walks with a stick, from a Santander bank in Newington Road and on to a number five Lothian bus. After getting off in Grange Road at 10.10am, the man was approached from behind.

Paterson tried to rob him, but found the victim had no cash or valuables.

Detective Inspector Stuart Harkness said: “His conviction is testament to the robust evidence levied against him.”
