Burns Supper bites the dust

A TAXPAYER-funded Burns Supper has been axed for a second successive year.

The city council cancelled the annual event last year after concerns about the £4000 cost.

It has been confirmed that the event will not return this year, with Lord Provost George Grubb set to represent the council at the Edinburgh and District Burns Club’s Burns Supper – where he will provide the toast – instead.

The event was first held in 2009 to mark the 250th anniversary of Burns’ birth and was repeated in 2010 despite widespread concerns about the cost.
