The controversial drink, normally sold in 750ml glass bottles, was released in can form by distribution company J Chandler and Co last month.

It is understood that launch was a massive success and now the firm has run out of stock of its first run of 16,000 cans.

However it has now announced it will produce another 16,000 can run at the end of June.

Stewart Wilson, from Buckfast’s distribution company, J Chandler, said: “The firm have decided to do a second trial run of another 16,000 cans at the end of this month.

“It’s gone extremely well. Some of our wholesalers sold out of the cans within 24 hours of them arriving. There is still some out there - but not very much.

“The feedback from our retailers is if it’s kept in the chilled cabinets it sells better.”

The firm has still to decide whether to add the new can permanently to its range.
