Prince Philip, 90, travelled from Sandringham to the cardiothoracic unit at Papworth Hospital, in Cambridge, where it emerged he had a a blocked coronary artery.

A successful “invasive procedure of coronary stenting” was performed, Buckingham Palace said.

Dickie Arbiter, a former press secretary to the Queen, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s health is actually pretty good given that he is 90.”

David Cameron gets tough over ads

Prime Minister David Cameron is planning tougher action against “unscrupulous” companies that use sexualised advertising and “pester power” to sell goods to children. Businesses have been warned they face new rules.

The initiative will be seen as an attempt by Mr Cameron to reach out to mothers amid concerns over his standing among female voters.

George Michael ‘incredibly fortunate’

Pop star George Michael has revealed he is “incredibly fortunate to be here” after being admitted to hospital with pneumonia while on tour in Europe.

The singer, back in the UK after being treated in a Vienna hospital, said an emotional thank you to doctors who he said saved his life. He said he had been through “the worst month of my life”.

Health service fails to meet its A&E targets

The NHS in England has missed its target of dealing with 95 per cent of patients within four hours of arrival at casualty, according to official figures.

In the week ending December 18, some 3129 patients waited more than four hours in emergency wards – or 5.3 per cent of the total.

Labour said that the figures reflected an “overstretched” service struggling to cope with the effects of the reorganisation ordered by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

Essex: About 50 homes have been evacuated over concerns a crane on a building site may be dangerous in high winds.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said residents had been asked to leave a block of flats in Saffron Walden after part of the crane collapsed last night.

Police are monitoring the situation and residents were taken to a nearby sports centre for shelter.

Cambridgeshire: Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of murdering a pensioner in his home.

The body of Llwelyn Thomas, 76, was found after police were called to his home in Chittering on Sunday.

Neighbours had noticed the retired farmer’s lights had been on all night. A police spokesman said the boy was arrested and is currently being held in Parkside police station in Cambridge.
