Britain today: Plea to businesses to recruit jobless Britons

WORK and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has issued a plea to business chiefs to recruit more out-of-work British youths, rather than taking on migrant workers.

More than half the new jobs created in the UK over the last year went to foreign nationals, he said.

Call for tougher penalties when patient records lost

THE Information Commissioner has called for tougher penalties on NHS trusts and hospitals who lose patients' personal medical records.

Christopher Graham said fines of up to 500,000 could be imposed to counter what he called a "disturbing" culture in the health service.

It is believed that millions of records have been lost by health organisations in data breaches which include staff losing laptops, memory sticks and documents.

Talks on nuclear PR fall-out

GOVERNMENT officials conferred with the nuclear industry on how to deal with the public relations fall-out from the earthquake crisis at Japan's Fukushima reactor, released internal e-mails reveal.

One official warned that the disaster threatened to "set the nuclear industry back globally" and said it was vital not to let anti-nuclear campaigners use it to gain a publicity coup.

Northumbria: Police have launched an investigation after a woman's body was found in Northumbria. Officers closed a section of the A196 near the town of Morpeth following the discovery at 5.25pm yesterday. A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "An investigation is under way."
