The nursery nurse was rushed to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride where she later died. A boy, who is believed to have lived at the flat on Deveron Crescent, was taken into custody by police and was yesterday charged with murder.

McKenzie, who lived with her husband Bryan and had recently left her job at Glenburn House Nursery in East Kilbride to become a full-time foster parent, is believed to have suffered stab wounds.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "My friend's daughter lived across the close, she heard a commotion and went in to try to help. It must have been horrible."

Another, Harry Fleming, 50, said: "It's hard to think that a couple of hours later she was dead. It is terrible what has happened."

The 13-year-old boy is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court tomorrow.
