PHONE lines and the booking website for the Edinburgh International Book Festival were swamped with organisers reporting record first-day sales.

Talks featuring Andrew Marr, the Independence Debate with Kirsty Wark, the Celebration of Iain Banks and The Phoenix Comic Workshop in the Stripped programme all sold out on the first morning.

Nick Barley, director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, said: “I’m delighted to say we’ve sold more tickets across the programme on this first day of sales, than in any previous year.”
