Body recovered from canal

Police have recovered the body of a man from a car which plunged into the Caledonian Canal.

The vehicle crashed into the water from the road at Inverness yesterday morning.

Police, firefighters, the RNLI Kessock lifeboat crew and a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth were involved in the search at Muirtown locks.

Grampian Police diving team recovered the remains from inside the car late last night.

The dead man has not been formally identified, and no further details will be released until his next of kin have been told.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: “Following a report that a vehicle had gone into the canal near Canal Road, Inverness, Northern Police report that this vehicle has been recovered form the canal following assistance from Grampian Police diving team and Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service.

“Unfortunately the remains of a male person were recovered from within the vehicle.

“No further details are being released until next of kin have been identified and notified.”
