Body of elderly woman found on beach

POLICE officers are investigating the discovery of a body on a beach in East Lothian yesterday morning .

The body of the elderly woman was found shortly before 9am on a stretch of Musselburgh beach around 400 metres from the harbour.

Last night a police spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said that early indications suggested there were no suspicious circumstances.

It is not known if the severe weather contributed to the woman's death.

Police have yet to identify of the woman. Early investigations involved checking reports of missing women.

A postmortem examination is expected to take place in the next few days.

A number of local residents gathered to watch as police erected "gazebo-style" tent to allow the scene to be examined protected from the weather.
