Blood-covered man found outside flat

DETECTIVES were today trying to determine whether a man found lying with serious head injuries in a street was the victim of a violent assault.

The 33-year-old man was found in Brown Street in Haddington, East Lothian, at around 11.10pm on Sunday with blood covering his head and face.

His crumpled body was discovered by David Clelland, 30, pictured right, who returned home to find the man on the ground outside his main door flat.

Mr Clelland said: “I couldn’t see his face for the all the blood. I was shocked he was still alive. I could see a big gash on his head.”

The man was taken to the Western General Hospital where his condition was described as “serious but stable”.

Police believe he may have visited local takeaways and licensed premises prior to being found.

Detective Sergeant Keith Mackay said officers had yet to determine whether the man was attacked and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
