The best vantage points in Edinburgh to watch the Festival Fireworks

WHILE there is nothing quite like sitting in the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens as the Festival fireworks explode overhead, some of the most spectacular views of the highlight of Edinburgh's festivals calendar can be found slightly further afield.

When the skies are clear there are views to be taken advantage of from across the city.

Calton Hill, Salisbury Crags and Blackford Hill are three of the more obvious ones, there are just as great views to be enjoyed from less obvious viewing points.

Locations such as the bridge over the Western Approach Road, just off Lothian Road, while another great view can be found in the Grassmarket.

Stand outside the Apex Hotel and look up to catch an amazing sight.

If you are feeling more adventurous, why not book a trip on the Maid of the Forth’s Festival Fireworks Cruise and watch the night sky light up while bobbing about on the Firth of Forth (call 0131-331 5000 for details).

If you are in the south-west of the city, Bruntsfield Links offers fantastic views, however, for the best viewing head for the higher ground in front of Warrender Park Terrace.

Inverleith Park is another gem of a spot, popular with families.

So, if you want to escape the crowds in the city centre, head to Stockbridge and settle in the park, which has panoramic views of the castle.

In Leith? Head to the old railway line cycle path by Gosford Place, just off Ferry Road, for great views across the city skyline.

Finally, hiding in plain sight, Castle Hill by The Witchery has great views of the action.
