Ban backed to keep top job at UN

The United Nations Security Council has approved a second five-year term for secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, a critical last step before the 192-member General Assembly holds the definitive vote next week.

It is all but certain to endorse Mr Ban, 67, when it considers the matter on Tuesday. There are no other candidates. The South Korean earlier secured the backing of the five permanent members of the security council.
