Backing blow for urban wind turbine

Campaigners have pledged to press ahead with plans to build a community wind turbine in the Capital, despite Scottish Water withdrawing its support for the scheme.

Greener Leith and Portobello Transition Town (PEDAL) want to see the turbine built at Seafield Waste Water Treatment Works.

However, talks stalled after the private sector companies that manage the PFI contract told Scottish Water to accept liability for any accidents involving the proposed turbine.

Greener Leith and PEDAL have said they would be prepared to fund the insurance and will try to resolve the issue through negotiations and political solutions.

Greener Leith chairwoman Charlotte Encombe said: “We are bitterly disappointed to have got this far only for the project to be stalled on what looks like a technicality.”
