Audrey family to lead Pedal on Parliament

THE family of a cycling pensioner tragically killed by a careless driver will lead a 3000-strong column of cyclists as they pedal to the Scottish Parliament.

Audrey Fyfe, 75, was knocked down at the junction of Portobello Road and Craigentinny Avenue in August 2011, but the sentencing of the driver provoked outrage after he avoided a lifetime ban.

Her family, along with relatives of Andrew McNicoll, another cyclist who died on Edinburgh’s roads, will lead the Pedal on Parliament protest to push for safety for cyclists.

They will be joined by former world champion cyclist Graeme Obree and radio presenter Grant Stott, while Olympic heroes Sir Chris Hoy and Chris Boardman have lent their 
support.

McCourt received 300 hours of community service after he was found guilty of causing Mrs Fyfe’s death by careless driving.

The 49-year-old, who was previously jailed for causing the death of student George Dalgity by reckless driving in 1986, was also hit with a five-year driving ban.

Pedal on Parliament’s organisers now say her family will lead the cycle from the Meadows to Holyrood on Sunday.

City MP Ian Murray and MSP Kez Dugdale will be sharing a tandem bike at the event.
