‘Attempt to de-skill sector’

MAJOR electrical contractors in Scotland who plan to scrap an industry-wide agreement have been accused of trying to drive down wages and de-skill the sector.

Lothians Labour MSP Neil Findlay said: “The proposals made by these firms smacks of sheer opportunism. It is clear that they see the present economic crisis as an opportunity to reduce wages, impose significantly worse working conditions on employees and de-skill electricians. This will impact upon huge swathes of Scottish workers.”

He criticised a “lack of action” by the Scottish Government and urged ministers to meet representatives of the Unite union.
