Artists come out of Africa and into city

A CULTURAL festival featuring some of South Africa’s most exciting emerging artists will come to the Capital next month.

INDABA, organised by the Edinburgh-based No Globe collective, will see performances and exhibitions by photographer Chris Saunders and kwaito producer Spoek Mathambo.

Saunders, whose images of South African street culture have appeared in top style and fashion magazines, will bring his debut exhibition to Edinburgh.

The show will feature his acclaimed portrait series of the Smarteez fashion collective as well as pieces from a previous exhibition on the Real Action Pantsula Dance from Johannesburg’s Orange Farm township.

Mathambo, hailed as one of the biggest stars to emerge from South Africa’s kwaito scene, will promote his new album Father Creeper during his only Scottish appearance.

The festival takes place between May 17 and 31. For more information, call 0131-668 2198.
