Artist doubles up at gallery

Renowned artist and playwright John Byrne was seeing double as he posed next to his portrait, by David Eustace, as VIP guest at the official reopening of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery yesterday.

He was the first to enter the building when the doors opened to the public at 10am, following an ambitious £17.6 million restoration project.

It turned out to be the gallery’s busiest day, with more than 2000 people coming through the doors.

First Minister Alex Salmond officially reopened the museum at a ceremony in the Great Hall.
