Around town: Pupils up the pace at 2014 Games event

CASTLEBRAE Community High School was today set to host a Commonwealth Games Festival for 70 primary pupils.The event, for youngsters from Castleview, Niddrie Mill, St Francis and Newcraighall primaries, is celebrating the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland in 2014. The children were to compete in teams in a variety of events. Musselburgh Grammar was to host a similar event for Musselburgh Burgh, Wallyford, Stoneyhill, Campie, Whitecraig and Pinkie St Peter's.

Do mention the war at history day

A DROP-IN surgery on the First World War is being held today at the Central Library on George IV Bridge.

Members of the public are invited to bring medals, family diaries, photos and artefacts to discuss with specialists from 12-3.30pm.

Yvonne McEwen, project director of Edinburgh's War, said: "There must be many families out there who are not aware of the history behind the medals and papers."

Speed camera sites in focus

MOTORISTS are being warned to look out for mobile speed cameras across Lothian next week.

The sites include the A90 Cramond, A70 Balerno, A71 Polbeth and Breich, West Granton Road, Muirhouse Parkway, A706 Whitburn, A899 Lizzie Bryce, A705 East Whitburn, A89 Deer Park and A198 Dirleton Toll.

Airline has a French fancy

BUDGET airline Ryanair is set to begin flights between Edinburgh and the French city of Poitiers. The service will operate on Thursdays and Sundays.

Ryanair's Michelle Lowe said: "Ryanair is pleased to welcome passengers on board its first summer flight to Poitiers."

Go bananas for author's debut

AUTHOR Emily Dodd will launch her first ever published book, Banana me Beautiful, in the city next month.

The event will take place on the Leith Agency Boat, Mary de Guise Barge, at The Shore on July 11, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

It will feature live music and free drinks.

It's stall happening at family farmers' market

THE Juniper Green Farmers' Market is set to take place at the weekend.

The family market will be held in the car park of the Kinleith Arms on Lanark Road on Saturday, and is expected to run from 9am to 1pm.

Stall holders will be selling everything from fresh meat and vegetables to chocolate, game, fish and speciality bread, among other produce. There will also be plant stalls available.

Entertainment will be provided by pupils from Juniper Green Primary School.
