Appeal for signs to end traffic chaos

NEW Town residents plagued by traffic chaos today appealed for more signs to encourage motorists to use alternative routes.

Roadworks linked to the tram project have seen lengthy rush-hour tailbacks in Broughton Street, Albany Street and Abercromby Place all this week.

Transport convener Lesley Hinds said many drivers were still using the route, introduced as the official diversion for most traffic when York Place was shut for tram works in the summer, even though there was now a different diversion using North and South St David Street, Princes Street and Leith Street. Audrey Cavaye, secretary of New Town and Broughton community council, said there was “not enough” signage to encourage people to use the alternative diversion route.

City centre Tory councillor Joanna Mowat backed the call for better signposting. She said: “They have under-estimated the need to give people a nudge to go the other way.”

Councillor Hinds said: “The changes are well signposted, but I recognise that many drivers are now accustomed to driving along the diversion route and it will take a bit of time for them to get used to the new arrangements.

“We ask all road users to be aware of the changes and to pay special attention to the new signage.”
