Now named Bill and Ben, the terra-pins are being cared for at the charity’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Senior Inspector John Toule said the duo were in “good condition” but said the number of terrapins being dumped was
“worrying”.

“There can be a boredom factor with
terrapins because owners can’t take them for a walk or cuddle and play with them,” he said.

Terrapins can live for up to 30 years so the decision to take one on shouldn’t be made lightly.

“We’d ask anyone who recognises Bill and Ben and knows who might have owned them to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Hotline on 03000 999 999.
