Appeal after domestic assault in street

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a domestic assault incident that took place at the junction of Windsor Street and Montgomery Street last night.

The incident occurred at around 7:40pm when a man, aged 21, was seen to be in an argument with a young woman, aged 17, as they crossed Montgomery Street.

As the woman crossed the road, the suspect grabbed her by hair, pulled her back and then forcefully pushed her head forward, causing her to fall to the ground and hit her head off of the traffic island kerb. Police attended the incident and later traced the couple.

Police believe that two members of the public witnessed the incident and are asking for them to come forward.

The first witness is described as in his late 40s, with a medium build and dark medium length hair. He was wearing dark clothing and after the incident walked along Montgomery Street towards Easter Road.

The second witness is a woman of Chinese appearance, mid 20s, 5ft 9” and of thin build. She has dark hair with a fringe, which was tied up. She was wearing a wearing a thick dark coat and was carrying either a backpack or instrument case on her back. After the incident she continued to walk down Leith Walk.

Police Constable Scott Everard said: “This was a shocking assault on a young woman and we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

“We are particularly keen to speak to the two members of the public we believe witnessed the incident occur and we are asking for them to immediately contact police.
