Anti-smoking group calls for more tobacco firm regulations

AN ANTI-SMOKING charity in Edinburgh has called for stiffer regulations on tobacco companies.

ASH Scotland has written to four main UK party leaders asking about the possibility of introducing a regulatory authority for nicotine and tobacco.

Chief executive Sheila Duffy said in her letter to Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Alex Salmond and Nick Clegg that this body would ensure full transparency when it comes to the conduct and behaviour of organisations which produce cigarettes.

She said: "Tobacco takes a major toll on the health of our nation, with 13,500 deaths in Scotland caused by smoking every year. This is a shocking waste of life yet there is no comprehensive regulation of the products that cause such harm."
