Animal meat supplies are running low

THE Scottish SPCA is appealing to animal lovers to donate tinned meat to its Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre after it reported that food donations were at a 13-year low.

Staff at the centre in Balerno have already cared for more than 1000 animals this year, with almost half of those being cats and dogs.

Patrick the cat, who was found with a shattered pelvis and broken jaw after being hit by a car, is just one of the many animals currently being looked after by the charity. He is now recovering well and healing nicely after an operation.

Centre manager Diane Stewart said: “We’re going through a lot of food at the moment as we’re caring for such a large number of cats and dogs, and we’re very short on tinned meat.

“Food donations from members of the public have really fallen lately. In the 13 years I’ve worked here at the centre, it’s never been this low.

“We are getting by, but we have plenty of tums to feed and when we do receive tinned food, it’s used very quickly.”

Donations can be handed in daily between 10am and 4pm.
