But, a contempt of court order was granted banning any media coverage of the short hearing.

The order was challenged by various media outlets and a further hearing took place at the court yesterday.

After submissions made by Roddy Dunlop QC for the media and James Wolffe QC for Mr Coulson, sheriff McCormack lifted the order.

Mr Coulson was detained at his London home in May this year and driven more than 400 miles by officers from Strathclyde Police to Glasgow.

He was held at Govan police station where he was questioned and later charged.

Coulson became editor of the now defunct News International paper in 2003, before he resigned in 2007.

Mr Coulson is expected to appear at court at a later date.
