Researchers in the Honduran rainforest using a 3D mapping technique discovered what appeared to be the remains roads and building foundations in the Mosquitia region, in an area believed by some to be home to Ciudad Blanca - The White City - which according to local legend is said to be a buried metropolis full of gold.

The Conquistadors hunted for The White City during the 16th century, and signs of an ancient civilisation in the region were recorded by archaelogists throughout the 20th century, but the existence of the city has not been confirmed.

Planes have flown over the area sending laser pulses towards the ground, helping to map out the topography below the trees.

Archaeologists and researchers plan to revisit the area later this year to conduct further investigations.
