Air travel chaos: 'We faced sleeping in airport lobby but US couple took us in' says Scots family

A KIRKCALDY family stranded in the US have been put up by strangers who took sympathy with their plight.

Andrew and Fiona Kerr and their daughters Lauren, ten, and Caitlin, eight, had enjoyed an 18-day holiday, but faced being forced to sleep in New York's Kennedy Airport until their flight could be rearranged.

However, Good Samaritans Sueli and Bruce Barton stepped in and offered to put them up in their own home. The couple travelled to the terminal to see if they could help those displaced by the chaos caused by the volcanic ash cloud.

The Kerrs, who had been on holiday to New York and Disney World, were due to travel home on Saturday but had been told it could be this Thursday before their flight was rescheduled.

Expressing his thanks to the Bartons, Mr Kerr said: "We could tell that these were just nice people who wanted to help us. They're fantastic."

"It was fantastic that instead of sleeping in an airport lobby, we were able to go back to their house and sleep in a bed.

"It was a question of trust, not only for us, but for them, too. They were opening their home to complete strangers."

Mrs Barton said: "Our goal was to get a family with a baby or at least children. We had heard that the stranded people were getting taken advantage of. We kept thinking of families not having diapers or money or showers."
