Air travel chaos: Pain in Spain as youth football team faces £5,000 bill to hire a bus home

A SCOTTISH youth football team stranded in Spain is facing a bill of thousands of pounds to get home.

Musselburgh Windsor's U-14 team raised 12,500 to attend a tournament in Barcelona and were due to fly back to Scotland on Sunday. However, the continuing disruption means they have been forced to look at alternative modes of transport.

Head coach Davy Scott said it will cost 5,000 to hire a coach to bring the youngsters home, but the team are refusing to let the disruption and expense sap their spirits.

The contingent of 18 players and four coaches were due to fly with EasyJet, but knew by the weekend that the flight was doubtful. The airline has rescheduled their flights for Monday, but the team is hoping to return home before then by hiring a bus.

"We came to Spain after raising 12,500 through fundraising events like bagpacking and race nights," Mr Scott said. "But if we get a coach to leave from Scotland to take us home, it'll end up costing us about 5,000.

"The club are trying to transfer us 2,500 to help us with the costs of our accommodation, and parents back at home are calling round people to help out and arrange things. It means we'd get home by Wednesday or Thursday."

"The hotel we are staying at have also been good, offering us a half-price deal."
