Affordable housing boost

HOUSING Minister Keith Brown today launched a new scheme which could help build up to 1500 new affordable homes for rent across Scotland.

Visiting Granton, Mr Brown said the National Housing Trust (NHT) initiative would allow housing associations to fund homes underwritten by the Scottish Government.

The scheme follows a similar initiative for councils and developers. The Lighthouse Court development in Granton Park Avenue which Mr Brown visited saw 62 affordable homes built through NHT. They are due to be available for let shortly.

Mr Brown said: “Faced with sharp reductions in public finances, the Scottish Government and its partners have sought new ways of financing the building of much-needed affordable homes.

“NHT is a leading example of the type of innovative, high value for money model needed to boost affordable housing supply and stimulate the economy.

“I would urge housing associations to embrace this scheme and take the opportunity to get involved.”
