9am Briefing: Thousands of homes in Leith without power after electrical fault

AROUND 2000 homes across Leith were left with no power last night after a fault occurred in ScottishPower's high-voltage network.

The lights went out just after 11pm, with the electricity supply fully restored in more than half of homes by around 12.20am, and the rest following at 12.50am.

ScottishPower said engineers were on scene as quickly as possible to rectify the problem, which was caused by a cable fault in the area, and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

New evidence has emerged of Tarmac surrounding the tram lines beginning to disintegrate and the rubber lining becoming deformed.

It is at least the fifth time cracking has been discovered since track laying work in Princes Street was completed in November 2009.

City transport leader Gordon Mackenzie suggested the contractor would have to pick up the extra bill, which could hit hundreds of thousands of pounds.
