9am Briefing: Snow returns to Lothians

HEAVY snow has returned to parts of the Lothians with more forecast for the Capital.

As much as 10cm of snow have been forecast for the weekend, with sudden plummets in temperatures expected.

Already some delays were affecting trains from Edinburgh Park, in the west of the city, while Edinburgh Airport - though open - has warned passengers to check with their airlines before arriving.

• A CAMPAIGN will be launched today to stop Lothian buses merging with the company tasked with running the city's trams.

The motion at the Scottish Parliament, lodged by SNP MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville, states the case for a merger "has not been made".

The council said both organisations were due to run city transport networks for years to come.

• A 25-YEAR-old man has been treated for burns to his hands after a pan of food caught fire at a flat in Fountainbridge last night.

Fire crews were called to the property in Tay Street around 8.30pm last night after the fire spread from the kitchen.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the man had carried the blazing pan from the kitchen to the bathroom in an attempt to put it out, but that the blaze had then set fire to the bathroom.

• THE latex puppet of former Edinburgh MP Malcolm Rifkind, used in popular television comedy Spitting Image, has sold at auction in London.

The doll fetched nearly 400, and was put up for sale by the creator along with images of former prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major, as well as Northern Irish politician Ian Paisley.
