9am Briefing: Baby girl in hospital after deliberate fire

A 15-MONTH-OLD baby girl was taken to hospital following a deliberate fire in the city.

Police are investigating the blaze, which took hold in the stairwell of a flat in Admiralty Street, Leith, at just after 4.30am today.

Fire crews from Marionville and McDonald Road used a high-pressure hose reel to put out a pile of rubbish in the stair which had been set alight.

The infant was taken with her parents to the Sick Kids Hospital for a precautionary check-up. A police spokesman said the incident was being treated as ‘suspicious’.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary was in Edinburgh today to announce major cuts to the airline’s routes from the Capital.

It comes amid a row with Edinburgh Airport operator BAA over the financial terms of Ryanair’s contract.

It is believed the airline has threatened the airport with a major withdrawal if a suitable arrangement is not reached.

In a Twitter message, the News Corp owner said it was time for British politicians to “let Scotland go and compete”, adding “everyone would win”.
