700 injured as trains collide

MORE than 700 people were injured, 70 of them seriously, when a commuter train struck another which had stopped on a rail line serving South Africa's commercial capital on Thursday night.

An investigation has been launched into the incident outside Johannesburg, near the mainly black township of Soweto.

In the past South Africa's poor and unsafe transport infrastructure has sparked passenger protests. The ruling African National Congress's transport minister Sibusiso Ndebele called the latest crash "unfortunate" and said a multibillon pound infrastructure improvement programme was under way.
