Air Canada suspends flights to Edinburgh and Glasgow

The airliner has suspended or delayed opening routes to dozens of European destinations.

Air Canada has suspended all flights in and out of Edinburgh and Glasgow airports amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement comes after the Canadian airliner had already significantly reduced its services, and grounded a large section of its fleet.

The company told passengers that: “We continue to adapt our schedule and capacity in response to COVID-19 and have postponed launches or extended the temporary suspension of several routes.”

A notice on the Air Canada website told customers that flights between Toronto Pearson and Edinburgh Airport were subject to a “full summer suspension”.

Flights on the route between Toronto Pearson and Glasgow Airport are similarly affected.

It means passengers may have to wait until the summer of 2021 before they are able to travel directly between Scotland and Canada.

The airliner also announced the temporary suspension of dozens of routes to European cities.

Flights from Calgary and Ottowa to London Heathrow have been suspended until June 23, and flights there from Montreal will not reopen until May 15.

Meanwhile the company has delayed the start up of its summer routes to Dubin until late June.

Yesterday Air Canada cancelled flights to and from the United States, as Donald Trump unveiled plans to suspend immigration into the country to fight “the invisible enemy” of Covid-19.

Canada and the United States have agreed to increase border restrictions in an effort to control the spread of the virus.

The US has more than 800,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19, and around 40,000 deaths.
