Supermarket Tesco has recalled a batch of its own-brand Simply Ginger Beer because the product contains barley, which is not mentioned on the label and could pose a health risk to people with a gluten allergy.

The affected product, which has a best before date of 31 March 2014, a batch code of L3081 and relates to drinks packaged in 500ml bottles, has sparked an allergy alert from the Food Standards Agency.

“Customers with an allergy or an intolerance to barley or gluten who have bought this product are advised not to drink it. Please return it to your nearest Tesco for a full refund,” said a statement from the Food Standards Agency.

Customer notices will be displayed in stores, explaining why the product has been recalled, while allergy support organisations will also inform their members about the recall.
