Interior designs: ‘Paper templates will help work out the ideal layout’

When choosing a new sofa or chairs, it is worthwhile researching the options. A well-constructed sofa or chair should last ten years or more.

Dimensions are important: you need to know it will fit through the door and that it is appropriate to the size of your living space. Sofas with broad armrests tend to have wider seat cushions, but you should measure room space carefully as two and three-seaters vary widely in overall size. Paper templates laid on the floor will help you work out the ideal size and layout.

Consider the depth of the seat, which affects back support. Generally, there is greater support with a sofa that has a shorter seat depth and a fixed back rather than loose back cushions.

Lighter sofas tend to use less wood, which may be stapled so they lack durability. Look for coil sprung or strong webbing on frames, while upholstery should be durable, and stain and fade resistant. Decide whether you want a high or low backrest. Bear in mind, if there is nowhere else for the sofa but with its back to the door or in front of a window, it will act as a visual barrier.

Two sofas or a corner piece offer sociable seating. Most people feel uneasy sitting in the middle of a three-seater sofa, so many three seaters actually perform as two seaters. Combining contemporary sofas with traditional-style armchairs adds a designer look, while a traditional sofa flanked by modern chairs allows the beauty of each to show up. Remember, strong colours or patterns on upholstery will not only dominate the space, but also restrict future décor choices. Finally, look for timber carrying the FSC mark and soft furnishings that meet safety standards. k
