The live online map, compiled by walking and cycling charity Sustrans, aims to make cycling easier for those who are still travelling to and from work each day during the lockdown.

How does the map work?

The map displays four different pins on a range of cycling offers, including access to bikes, repairs and maintenance, and equipment and gear. It also includes information on bike stores that are still open across Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Users can search the map by street names and postcode areas to find the nearest resources.

The map also features links to a variety of other cycling related content, including cycling and walking tips.

Are bike shops still allowed to open?

While the UK was put under lockdown on 23 March, around 40 per cent of the country’s workforce are still required to travel to and from work, as they are classed by the government as ‘key workers’.

Such workers include NHS staff, cleaners, carers and supermarket workers, many of which cannot do their job from home.

Bicycle shops were among the few retailers listed by the government as able to remain open, if they wish to, to ensure transport for key workers and some deliveries.

The cycling industry has since come together to provide assistance and offers on cycles and services to key workers as a thank you for their work during the current crisis.

Sustrans Scotland director, Karen McGregor said, “It’s fantastic to see how the cycling industry has come together to support the people who are working so hard to get us through this crisis.

“The online map was created with the needs of key workers in mind and we hope it will prove useful for everyone needing to cycle to work, be it an experienced commuter who may need a spare part or a novice who needs access to a cycle.

“The UK Government has recognised the role cycling can play in helping key workers travel in these challenging times, and we hope this will inspire long-term funding for better walking and cycling infrastructure that Scotland needs.”

How do I access the map?

Key workers who want information about cycling related offers, or need access to a bike to get to work during the pandemic, can access the Cycles for Key Workers map via the Sustrans website.

Any cycle stores which are still open during the lockdown that are not listed on the map can register online to promote any offers.
