A poem was ready by society bard Maoileas Caimbeul and a moving rendition of Cumha na Cloinne (Lament for the children) was performed by piper Euan MacCrimmon, Mr Campbell said.

The protest against plans to build new homes at Viewhill Farm, which sits on the edge of the battlefield and witnessed significant contact on April 16 1746, was a recurring theme of this year’s commemoration.

Mr Campbell said: “The event has got bigger, bigger and bigger in recent years.

“Culloden is quite a place to visit and people want to pay their respects there, where the last battle was fought on Scottish soil. It is a sombre event to a degree but is also a great meeting place for people.”
