Retro chic and fairway views, close to the city

Whitehill Woods is a development of contemporary homes, period apartments in a historic building and a brand new golf course which heralds the next phase in the history of the Whitehill estate in Rosewell, Midlothian, just outside Edinburgh.

Whitehill House, the Victorian mansion built in 1840, is currently being split into apartments due for completion in 2017.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the new homes in the estate’s grounds are available to buy, with a showhome just opened for viewing.

The ten detached properties offer a choice of size and layout, designed to fit into the woodland setting with an external finish of brick and larch timber cladding.

The houses have been built to an exacting energy performance standard with high quality insulation values and triple glazing throughout.

The showhome was designed by Cate Warren of Cate Warren Interiors, who has conceived a chic retro style for the interior decor.

Warren says: “We wanted to maintain that rural feel, while considering that homebuyers viewing this area would most likely be city commuters.

“From a design point of view, we felt that the houses have a feel of the Californian mid-century homes, so we embraced this style, mixing it with high-end, contemporary elements to create the overall design, with a slightly eclectic and cosmopolitan feel.”

Shonagh Morgan of selling agent Savills says: “With good schools in the area, along with a range of outdoor pursuits including golf, horse riding and mountain biking, Whitehill Woods is well placed for an active lifestyle”.

Two plots are currently available through Savills.

The Ramsay is a five-bedroomed home with double garage, while the Capielaw is four-bedroomed, split over two floors with a double detached garage and balcony at the front.

The homes have been designed with plentiful storage, large garages with space for recreation or workshops and spacious utility rooms with direct access to both the garage and outside space.

Whitehill House was designed in an exuberant Tudor revival style by William Burn for Lord Ramsay, Victorian owner of many of Scotland’s coal fields.

In the first world war it was used as a hospital before becoming a home for disabled children until 1998.

The Whitehill House Golf Course was designed in the last decade by the Swiss designer and architect, John Chilver-Stainer. A new club house incorporates a bar and café.
