New homes for the Commonwealth Games Village

This time last year, 6,500 athletes and officials were preparing to move into the Athletes’ Village in Dalmarnock, Glasgow, in preparation for the start of the Commonwealth Games. In the year since, the properties at the Village - designed to be used as permanent homes long after the final whistle of the games - have been welcoming new owners.

To date 230 homes at the Village have sold, leaving 70 available. Hundreds of residents have moved in to this eco-friendly development in landscaped grounds by the side of the River Clyde.

House types include the Hibiscus, a four bedroom end terrace townhouse; the Thistle, a two bedroom terrace; the Silver Fern and the Yellow Elder, both three bedroom mid-terrace villas; the Pink Rose, a one bedroom apartment and a two bedroom apartment, the Water Lily. Prices start at just £80,000 for the smallest properties but all the homes here represent good value for money. For prospective buyers, there are six showhome available to view here.

Previous to the planning for the Commonwealth Games, the site, which measures 35 hectares, was a mix of industrial and open land with some residential properties. The project, which created 1500 jobs, started in 2009.

Liz Mallon says of this new phase in its life: “Our new owners started moving into their new homes in March of this year and their feedback is terrific. With so many new amenities on the doorstep and plans for a new primary school well underway, the Athletes’ Village really is testament of the lasting legacy of the Commonwealth Games”.

First time buyers Rakesh and Lakshmy Bose are perhaps typical buyers here. The couple had been renting a one bedroom flat in Glasgow city centre, and with a new baby on the way, they were eager to get more space and escape the noise of the city.

Rakesh says: “We were blown away by the greenery surrounding this new development and the fact it was so family orientated with gorgeous river views.”

The couple were also impressed by the quality of the build and the affordability of the house prices, plans for the new riverside woodland park and new primary school at the Village. They bought a two bedroom Thistle home which, with a back and front garden, also boasts an extremely spacious loft which Rakesh hopes to convert to a games room soon.

They were equally impressed by the energy efficiency features within the homes, including the super insulation features and solar panels, resulting in a significant reduction in energy bills.

Rakesh says of the location: “I cycle to work in the city centre and my wife, who is doing a PhD at the University of Strathclyde, plans to get the train from nearby Dalmarnock station – so it will be a handy a five minute journey to the city centre.

He said: “We can’t believe that we live so close to the city centre, yet we are surrounded in greenery and beautiful river views.”
