Meanwhile Saltcoats still tops the list for best value properties, where the average property costs £110,761. This west coast town is closely followed by Rothesay, Isle of Bute, where you can snap up a one-bedroom flat for around £47,500 and a three bedroom house from £115,000.

Where can you splash the cash?

North Berwick and St Andrews are some of the pricier places to buy property. In North Berwick a typical home is worth around £360,435, edging out second placed St Andrews, where a property is valued at about £300,319. These scenic towns, loved by tourists are the most expensive outside southern England where Broadstairs, Kent has seen average property price rises of 10.45 per cent in the last year, knocking Margate off the top spot.

Lawrence Hall, spokesperson for Zoopla comments: “With Broadstairs’ Dickensian history and proximity to London it’s easy to see why it tops the list of this year’s best performing seaside hotspots.”

“Although many areas of high growth are in the south of the country, Scotland, with its incredible coastline, still represents fantastic value for money for anyone looking to purchase a beautiful beach retreat."

"For value for money, buyers should look to North Ayrshire where seaside properties in Saltcoats cost on average just £110,761. At the other end of the scale, popular North Berwick remains a costlier location to buy in with average prices being more than three times that amount at £361,540”.
